Leonard Abbott was a leading figure in the American socialist movement in the early twentieth century. His father, Lewis, was an American businessman who for some twenty years lived in Liverpool, representing the interests of American firms.
Abbott moved to the USA in 1897, settling in New York and becoming art editor of The Literary Digest. He continued to contribute to a wide variety of publications whilst establishing himself as a leading member of the Social Democratic Party of America. He later became prominent in the field of libertarian education.
Abbott’s family lived firstly at Dorcas House, St Michael’s Road L17 and then at 17 Linnet Lane L17.
